A 1000 cheque presentation to James McIlvar, Irish Pilgrimage Trust leader

Two final year students from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, will travel to Lourdes on Easter Sunday to spend a week working as volunteers for the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.

Students Louise Bogues and Ciara McGrath, along with Miss Sinead McCallan, Head of Home Economics at Loreto College, and her colleague Mr Peter Loughran, Head of Spanish, will spend a week working as leaders and carers, in a pilgrimage which sees up to 5000 young people with special needs travelling to Lourdes. The Loreto quartet will work with young people with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, from the local area of Co. Derry and Co. Antrim, under the leadership of James McIlvar, who is himself a former student of Loreto College Coleraine.

In the course of the week, the group will take part in a vast range of activities, from community Masses to enjoying the local scenery and amenities of the Lourdes area. In a total pilgrimage of some 5000 young people, each small group comprises approximately 11 young people and 11 helpers, and includes qualified doctors and nurses as well as chaplains.

As Ciara, Louise and Miss McCallan prepared for their trip, having generously agreed to give up a week of their Easter holiday, Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, presented a cheque for 1000 to local pilgrimage leader James McIlvar on behalf of the College, following some enthusiastic fund-raising among senior students and staff.

College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan paid tribute to the great generosity displayed by the group in terms of time and spiritual commitment, and wished them well on their pilgrimage on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
