01/04/2009 LORETO YEAR 9 STUDENTS HAVE THE “STEM” EXPERIENCE

All Year 9 students at Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, spent Friday 27th March 2009 at the Coleraine Campus of the University of Ulster, taking part in the STEM Experience, organised by Sentinus in conjunction with the Department of Education.

The four STEM areas, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, were addressed in a very informative, interesting and entertaining manner in the course of the day. The aim of the programme is to excite and enthuse young people about all four STEM components.  In the course of the day, the students participated in exciting ‘taster’ activities, which provided a good introduction to what STEM has to offer.

The activities engaged the students in practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths within an exciting and fun context.  The activities promoted skills in team work, problem solving and creative thinking, as well as enhancing learning in the STEM subjects and demonstrating the relevance of classroom learning.

Mr Frank Scullion, Head of Science at Loreto College, commented that
many of the students had reported how interesting and enjoyable they had found the day, expressing the hope that the Department of Education would find the funding to run the event every year.

“The best ideas often come from young minds,” Mr Scullion continued, “but they need something to spark such ideas. Even experienced scientists can renew the spark of their very earliest inspiration when viewing some of the fresh ways in which science can be demonstrated.”
