Top prizewinners in the 2009 British Association Young Scientists Fair

Two Year 12 students from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, have taken a top award at the annual British Association UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair in London.
Students Claire Hill and Dearbhla McCotter were runners-up in the Silver Award section, representing the GCSE-level age group, with their research into adolescents’ intake of folic acid.

Claire and Dearbhla presented a detailed and ground-breaking project on the extent to which folic acid is present in the diets of teenagers.  Following some detailed research into the folic acid content of a wide variety of foods, the students carried out research into the diets of the entire Year 10 population of Loreto College.  They then matched their findings to their hypotheses and to what they had found out about the dietary benefits of folic acid.

Claire and Dearbhla received great praise for their research and presentation, winning, among other things, a financial award for the College’s Science department.  This was not their first or only success: in 2008, their project took some top awards at the BT Young Scientists’ Competition in Dublin, and in the Seagate Young Innovators Competition in Belfast.

Claire and Dearbhla were congratulated on this impressive achievement by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.  Mr Lenehan also paid tribute to the dedication and assistance of the members of staff who had helped the talented duo prepare for the competition: Mr Brian McKenna (Head of Technology) and Miss Sinead McCallan (Head of Home Economics), along with staff from the Biological Sciences faculty of the University of Ulster, Coleraine.
