Runners-up in the Ulster Colleges' BT Nolan Cup competition

Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, paid tribute to the school’s Senior Gaelic team and its coach Mr Bob Murphy this week, following the team’s heroic performance in the Ulster Colleges’ BT Nolan Cup final.

Having put in sterling work throughout the competition, the team faced tough opposition from Aquinas Grammar Belfast in the final, which was played in the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena, Cookstown at the end of February.  Although the team returned home with runners-up medals and some regrets about missed chances, the boys performed to a very high standard in the showpiece event, in the end losing by a margin of only 2 points, with a final score of 1:10 to 1:8 in Aquinas’ favour.  Although the Belfast side was ahead throughout, Loreto were never far behind, with the scoreline frequently level as the Aquinas scores were matched by points by Coleraine players Fergal McCloskey (1-4), Aidan Mullan (0-2), James Hassan (0-1) and Ronan Mullan (0-1).  Under the captainship of Colm McGoldrick, the Loreto side put up a very valiant display in both attack and defence, never giving up, and refusing the Belfast side an easy game.

The team-members, who had trained weekly with their coach, Mr Bob Murphy, received high praise for their dedication, enthusiasm and school spirit from Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, on behalf of all the staff and students of the school.
