Loreto 1-6 St Louis’ Kilkeel 1-9

Last week Loreto College Coleraine came agonisingly close to lifting a first ever Herald Cup against favourites St Louis’ Grammar School Kilkeel. The match was played in difficult conditions, but was a very exciting encounter. The Derry side made an excellent start, playing with the breeze, and a Lorcan McCloskey goal after ten minutes settled pre-match nerves. Further points by Sean Leo McGoldrick and Frank Kealey left the Loreto boys going in five points to the good at half time.

A strong second half fight-back by the Kilkeel team had the match level going into injury time, thanks to corner forward Martin Clarke. In the final pulsating minutes, Kilkeel added further points to seal the victory. On the day, Loreto were best served by Sean Leo McGoldrick, Frank Kealey, Kieran Doherty and Robert Mullan. Reaching the Final was a tremendous achievement, and everyone at Loreto recognises that if this squad stays together a McLarnon Cup may be just around the corner. The Herald Cup team, along with their coaches Mr Peter Loughran and Mr Paul Cunning, were congratulated by College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan on behalf of all the students and staff of the school.
