12/01/2009 YOUNG ENTERPRISE EXPERIENCE FOR LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS

All Year 10 students at Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, took part in a half-day Young Enterprise Business workshop on Friday 9th January 2009.

The Young Enterprise Business Programme is a new and exciting initiative which provides pupils with an opportunity to develop economic and business understanding and appreciate the role of business and enterprise in our society.

The Year 10 students engaged in a practical, activity-based insight into economic and business life.  The session gave students hands-on introductions to a wide range of subjects relating to how businesses interact with investors, customers, employees and society in general.  Also included in the programme was a visit from a local entrepreneur John Armstrong from Armstrong Medical.  His input was especially valuable, as he related his business to the school curriculum.  In particular, Mr Armstrong discussed skills developed through the study of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, as Armstrong Medical make equipment for hospital theatres.  In addition he discussed the importance of History, as those who study History usually pay attention to detail and have great memories.  Art & Design and Technology and Design were also highlighted as important subjects for developing skills to be used in Armstrong Medical. English was also highlighted and poetry in particular as we all need inspiration according to John Armstrong.

Miss Sinead McCallan, Learning for Life and Work Co-ordinator at Loreto College, paid tribute to Karen Murphy of Young Enterprise Northern Ireland, who co-ordinated the workshops, and to John Armstrong, concluding that the day had been of considerable value to all the students.
