20/11/2003 LORETO STUDENTS WIN TOP HONOURS IN A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY

News of a tremendous achievement in CCEA A Level Geography reached the staff and students of Loreto College Coleraine this week. Not only did one former student take first place in Northern Ireland in this subject: two of her classmates joined her on the roll of honour, taking second and third places respectively.

Nora O’Múrchú, who took first place in Northern Ireland, achieved three A grades in her A Levels and is now at Queen’s University, Belfast studying Dentistry. A native of Portstewart, Nora received a prestigious award from the Royal Geographical Society in London for her achievement, and will be presented with a certificate from CCEA at an Awards Ceremony to be held in Belfast in December.

Second place in Northern Ireland went to Ciara O’Donnell, meanwhile, a native of Dungiven who also achieved three A grades at A Level. Ciara is now at Queen’s University, Belfast where she is studying Medicine.

In third place in Northern Ireland was John Lenehan. Having scored four A grades at A Level, John has currently moved away from his native town of Portstewart to take up a Gap Year placement in Aberdeen organised by the Royal Institute of Engineering placement scheme.

Miss Elizabeth Ann Curry, Head of Geography at Loreto College, was delighted with the pupils’ success, and commented that this accolade was a tremendous achievement for the Geography Department and the School. She attributed the students’ success to their hard work and the dedication of the teachers in the Geography Department: Mrs Susan Kelly and Mr Liam Shaw. This is not the first success for the Loreto College Geography Department: a former student also achieved second place in Northern Ireland in the 2002 Examinations Series.

Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated the students and their teachers on this tremendous achievement, commending all of those involved for their determination, diligence and academic enthusiasm.
