Students who raised money at the Children in Crossfire Relay, with teacher Mr P. Cunning

A group of Junior students from Loreto College Coleraine raised an impressive £500 for the charity Children in Crossfire when they took part in a world record attempt for the most participants in a 100 metre relay.  The event was held at the Meadowbank Stadium in Magherafelt on 11th October 2008.

The total amount raised for Children in Crossfire at the event was in the region of £15,000 – a magnificent total, which will be well used for ongoing projects in Africa.  Richard Moore, founder of Children in Crossfire, has recently been awarded one of the top accolades in the charity world: he was presented with the Beacon Special Prize for his work raising money for young people suffering from injustices.

The Loreto students who took part in the event were: William Lane, Liam Gerrard, Niamh Meehan, John McLister, Jack McCann and Peter Hodgkinson (all Year 10), and James Maguire, Barry Daly, Hal McGonigle, Theresa McIlwaine, Maria McLaughlin, Beth McIvor and Eimear Dillon (all Year 8).  Two Year 12 students, Jolene O’Kane and Amy O’Brien, also collected funds but were unable to attend on the day.

Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, paid tribute to all the students who took part, and to Cross Country Co-ordinator Mr Paul Cunning.  Particular tribute was paid by both teachers to Jack McCann (Year 10), who raised an impressive total of £100.  College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan commented that he was delighted to see the students using their sporting challenge to help others.
