20/10/2008 COMPETITION PLAUDITS FOR LORETO COLLEGE CHOIR

The Senior Choir from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, had a successful weekend at the Sligo International Choral Festival towards the end of October.

The choir, under the baton of Choirmaster Mr Howard Gillespie, is made up of just over forty girls drawn from Years 11-14 at the College, and performed a varied repertoire in two different Youth and Secondary School choirs classes at the competition.

Described as Ireland’s second-largest choral competition, the Sligo Choral Festival attracted over fifty choirs from throughout and beyond Ireland.  Receiving high praise for their performances, the Loreto College choir was placed, respectively, second and third in the two sections in which it competed.  During a busy weekend in Sligo, the students and their teachers also explored some famous local attractions associated with W.B. Yeats, such as Lissadell House, as well as singing at a morning Mass in one of the town’s churches.

The choir received praise and congratulations on their achievements at the Festival from Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal, on behalf of all the staff and students of Loreto.
