Leading prizewinners in the 2008 Seagate NI Young Scientists' competition

Two students from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, were among the top award-winners at the annual Seagate Young Innovators Northern Ireland Young Scientists’ competition, held on 19th June in the Odyessey Arena, Belfast.

Claire Hill and Dearbhla McCotter (both Year 11) presented a detailed and ground-breaking project on the extent to which folic acid is present in the diets of teenagers.  Following some detailed research into the folic acid content of a wide variety of foods, Claire and Dearbhla carried out research into the diets of the entire Year 10 population of Loreto College.  They then matched their findings to their hypotheses and to what they had found out about the dietary benefits of folic acid.

The students received great praise for their research and presentation, and took first place in the Mathematical Awards section, winning, among other things, a financial award for the College’s Science department.  The students were also selected to represent Northern Ireland as well as their school at the British Association Science Fair, to be held in London in March 2009.

Claire and Dearbhla were congratulated on this impressive achievement by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.  Mr Lenehan also paid tribute to the dedication and assistance of the members of staff who had helped the students prepare for the competition: Mr Brian McKenna (Head of Technology) and Miss Sinead McCallan (Head of Home Economics), along with staff from the Biological Sciences faculty of the University of Ulster, Coleraine.
