11/06/2008 LORETO STUDENTS ENJOY YOUNG ENTERPRISE WORKSHOP

All Year 8 students at Loreto College, Specialist School took part in the Young Enterprise: Moving On workshop on Wednesday 11th June 2008.

Led by Karen Murphy of Young Enterprise Northern Ireland, the day focused on alerting the students to their skills and qualities, and how these might equip them for the world of work.  As the day formed a part of the Loreto Specialist School Science programme, the focus of the Employability input was on careers in the general area of Science.  The students considered the skills and qualities needed for careers such as medicine, dentistry, forensic science and scientific teaching and research: having discussed these and examined what work in such professions might involve, the students explored these career areas through role-play.  The students also benefited from talks about careers in the field of science, which included engineering, biomedical science, nursing and dentistry, by visiting speakers.

Miss Maria Flannelly, Head of Careers at Loreto College, and Miss Sinead McCallan, Learning for Life and Work Co-ordinator, congratulated the Year 8 students on their enthusiastic participation, and paid tribute to the visiting speakers and Young Enterprise staff who had facilitated the day.  It is hoped that the experience will be repeated in future years as it proved to be both beneficial and enjoyable for the students involved.
