15/05/2008 HEARTSTART TRAINING FOR LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS

A group of sixth form students from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, recently completed some life-saving first aid training as part of their PE Programme.

The students gained the Young Life Saves 3 and Heartstart certificates, under the tutelage of PE teacher Mr Paul Byrne.  The students have all agreed to take home a ‘Mini Annie Kit’ to teach Emergency Life Support Skills (CPR) to their family and friends.

Each pupil is asked to train at least eight people they know and return eight questionnaires to the Loreto Physical Education Department by the end of September 2008. The kit includes and inflatable manikin to practice CPR on and a DVD of the training needed.  The students are allowed to keep the kit and continue to train as many people as they can.  This project is funded by the British Heart Foundation and they hope to continue to save lives by having more people in the community to deal with heart attacks and similar events.

The students and their teacher, Mr Paul Byrne, were praised for their initiative and their care for others by Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto, and by Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal.
