Winner of the Year 10 section of the Translink Ulster in Bloom Art Competition

A pupil from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, has taken a top prize in this year’s Hockney inspired Ulster In Bloom Art Competition.
Year 10 pupil Michael Cheuk took first place in Northern Ireland in the Year 10 section of the competition, and was presented with his prize in a ceremony at Laganside Bus Centre on April 10th.

The theme of this year’s competition centred around one of the founding fathers of Pop Art, David Hockney, and invited students to interpret what they see or would like to see from their window.  Adding her congratulations to the winners, Head Judge Rita Duffy said, “The pieces, which were eventually chosen as winners, really reflect the Hockney brief. ”

All twenty-one short listed artworks are available to view on Translink’s website - www.translink.co.uk and will be on display at Translink’s Central Station over coming weeks.

Michael’s prize will benefit many of his friends and class-mates: he has won one day’s use of a fifty-two seater Goldliner coach for an educational visit; plans are currently in negotiation in the Loreto College Art and Design Department for a suitable excursion to be undertaken before the end of the academic year.  In the meantime, Michael and his teacher, Miss Michelle McGarvey, were congratulated on this impressive achievement by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College and Mr Paul Cunning, Head of Art and Design at Loreto.
