07/03/2008 MARY WARD PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION AT LORETO COLLEGE COLERAINE

The annual inter-Loreto Mary Ward public speaking competition took place in Loreto College Coleraine at the end of February 2008.

The competition brings together students from three Loreto schools: Loreto Grammar School Omagh, Loreto College Letterkenny and Loreto College Coleraine, and is hosted in each venue in turn.  The competition seeks to highlight student awareness of the work of Mary Ward, the founder of the Loreto Order, as well as acting as an opportunity for students from the three sister schools to spend some time together.

This year’s competition drew a particularly strong entry from all three schools, and the students were praised by the panel of adjudicators for the high standard of their speeches and the enthusiasm and dedication with which they participated in the event.

In the three age-groups, the prizes were distributed as follows:
Junior
1st Roisin Ferny (Letterkenny)
2nd Nicole O’Neill (Letterkenny)

Intermediate
1st Hannah McGirr (Omagh)
2nd Antoinnette McGettigan (Omagh)

Senior
1st Rona Anderson (Omagh)
2nd Alice McGirr (Omagh)
3rd Julie McDwyer (Letterkenny) and Orlagh Mailey (Coleraine).

Loreto College English teacher Mrs Frances Pepin, who co-ordinated the event, paid tribute to all the students and staff who travelled from Letterkenny and Omagh to take part in the event, and all those who participated were congratulated on their efforts by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College Coleraine.
