07/02/2008 LORETO STUDENTS HONE INTERVIEW SKILLS

For the seventh successive year, Loreto College Coleraine recently hosted an Interview Skills day for Year 12 students, led by Sentinus, a major provider in Northern Ireland of partnerships between education and industry.

Co-ordinated by the Loreto College Careers Department, the day sought to give students a clear insight into marketing themselves for employability and preparing themselves for the professional interview situation.  Angela Wilson of Sentinus guided students through a variety of workshops during the morning session, which included information on the proper preparation and completion of application forms.  She also encouraged students to identify, develop and demonstrate the skills and qualities required for their chosen careers.

During the afternoon session, representatives from twenty local businesses and employment agencies interviewed one hundred and twenty students in approximately two hours, involving students in the interview panel situation and giving a great deal of highly valuable constructive feedback.  Many students remarked on how beneficial the experience had been and how they would try to implement the feedback and comments from their guest interviewers in any future interview situation.  Miss Maria Flannelly, Head of Careers at Loreto College, remarked on the success of the day, commenting that hopefully the experience would spur on a greater number of students to achieve higher examination grades as well as becoming more involved in the plethora of extra-curricular activities available at Loreto.

Miss Flannelly thanked Angela Wilson and all the business representatives who had taken part in the Interview Skills Day, as well as fellow Careers Teacher Mrs Eileen Diamond and assistant Mrs Maxine West for their support in the organisation and successful running of the event.
