Two students from Loreto College Coleraine were among the top award-winners at the annual BT Young Scientists competition, held last week in Dublin.

Claire Hill and Dearbhla McCotter (both Year 11) presented a detailed and ground-breaking project on the extent to which folic acid is present in the diets of teenagers.  Following some detailed research into the folic acid content of a wide variety of foods, Claire and Dearbhla carried out research into the diets of the entire Year 10 population of Loreto College.  They then matched their findings to their hypotheses and to what they had found out about the dietary benefits of folic acid.

The students received great praise for their research and presentation, and took second place in the Biological and Ecological Sciences Section in the Intermediate age group, winning, among other things, a financial award for the College’s Science department.

Claire and Dearbhla were congratulated on this impressive achievement by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.  Mr Lenehan also paid tribute to the dedication and assistance of the members of staff who had helped the students prepare for the competition: Mr Brian McKenna (Head of Technology) and Miss Sinead McCallan (Head of Home Economics), along with staff from the Biological Sciences faculty of the University of Ulster, Coleraine.
