13/12/2007 HELPING OTHERS AT LORETO COLLEGE

It has been a busy term for three groups of students from Loreto College Coleraine, set up with the intention of helping others – whether in the local community or further afield.

Mr Michael Denny of the Loreto Education Office visited the school on Tuesday 27th November. He met with ‘Justice League’ – a new group set up in the school of Y13 students – who meet every Thursday after school (facilitated by Mrs Siobhan McCarry and Miss Julie Galbraith). Their aim is to become more aware of, and make others more aware of, social justice issues. The Kolkata guidelines challenge us to become ‘agents for social change,’ as an integral part of the educational process. The Y13 students have devised power-point presentations and engaged in ‘peer-educating’ Y8 students during Religion classes, on the Millennium Development Goals. This proved to be very successful, and was a fantastic experience for the Y13 students, as well as delivering a powerful message. The Y8 students, equally, learned a lot from this opportunity. As a result of the talks given, a poster competition was promoted in the Art Department, which was focused on drawing images which would highlight the reasons for one or all of the Millennium Development Goals. The standard of work was amazing. Twelve students’ work was selected and will be published as a calendar, to highlight these issues.  Profits from the sale of calendars will go to the Loreto Missions.   Mr. Denny was able to join in with one of the classes being peer educated and congratulated the Y13 students on their efforts.  The students also designed, marketed and sold a significant number of canvas shopping bags, raising over £400 for the Loreto Missions as well as raising awareness of environmental issues and fair trade.

The school's St Vincent de Paul group, co-ordinated by Mr Kevin Conroy and involving Y12, Y13 and Y14 students, also meets every week.  The group's mission statement explains: 'Our aim is to enhance the quality of life for those in need, regardless of creed, colour or caste.'  The group is involved in weekly visits to homes for the elderly.  In addition to this, it has involved all form classes in the school in the 2007 Christmas Hamper Appeal: an impressive total of 35 hampers were presented to representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul from St John’s and St Malachy’s Parishes, Coleraine. In the new year, the SVP group hopes to continue to play an active part in school life: activities such as supermarket bag packing and a quiz have been planned for next term.

Running alongside the Loreto SVP group, the CLC (Christian Life Community) under the direction of Miss Brenda McLaughlin, has continued to be of great interest amongst the students and is a very worthwhile outreach programme.  In late November, Miss McLaughlin brought 6 students to the CEM Conference held in Dominican College, Portstewart.  The theme was building a more cohesive and shared society and the conference was run by Sr. Rose Devlin.

At the start of December, we welcomed back Emer McNicholl (Y14 2007), who came to talk to the current Year 14 students on her experience working with Habitat for Humanity.  encourages involvement in parish and being aware of Social Justice issues.

All the students involved in these very worthwhile activities were congratulated on their generosity and commitment by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.
