29/11/2007 ARTISTIC SUCCESS FOR LORETO STUDENTS

The work of a number of senior Art and Design students from Loreto College Coleraine was on display in November in Coleraine Town Hall, as part of the annual exhibition by the Coleraine Art Society.

Allied to this honour, two students were distinguished in the exhibition's prizegiving ceremony.  Barry O'Kane (Y13) won first prize in the student category for his painting of 'The Supper'.  Another work of his, 'Homeless', was highly commended.  This is not the first time that Barry has been rewarded for his talent and dedication in the field of Art and Design: two years ago he took a top award in a portrait competition run by the Ulster Museum.  On this occasion, Barry wins a silver salver and a cash award.  This salver has a close connection with the Loreto College Art and Design Department: in 2006 it was won by Martin Lynch, and in 2005 by Emma O'Boyle, who were final year students at Loreto in those respective years.  Second place in the Student category was awarded to Eimhear McMahon (Y13 at Loreto College) for her mixed media piece entitled Flower.

Both students and their teachers,  Mr Paul Cunning, Head of Art and Design, and Miss Michelle McGarvey, were congratulated on these impressive achievements by Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal.
