12/12/2018 LORETO COLLEGE MAKE IT 3 IN A ROW!

The Coleraine and District Year 8 League soccer final was contested in Limavady this week, when Loreto College faced a strong Limavady High School side in the Scroggy Road pitch in Limavady on Wednesday 12th December in tough conditions.  The Loreto year 8s knew they faced tough opposition as Limavady HS had beaten Loreto during the league campaign- the only team to do so.

As the game began, it was quite evident that both teams were apprehensive.  Few chances were taken on both sides during the opening 10 minutes of the game as both teams sought to settle in before coming more adventurous.  As the teams settled, Limavady HS took the lead after a dangerous ball had been lobbed into the Loreto box.  Loreto instantaneously replied through Conor McCool after some neat link up play by Luka Rogers and Niall Harmer.  The game ebbed and flowed without any real drama or chances until half-time.  Half time score: Loreto 1- 1 Limavady HS.

In the second half Loreto immediately took the game to LHS and showed no signs of nerves as they had in the first half.  As time went on the Loreto boys grew in confidence, creating several chances only to be thwarted by a brave Limavady HS goalkeeper.  However, the young goalkeeper could not withstand the siege for long as team Captain Senan Devine pounced on an Eoin Campbell header, blasting the ball into the top corner.  Five minutes later Loreto won a penalty after Conor McCool wrong footed a Limavady HS defender who, as a result, took Conor down in the box.  Senan Devine scored the resulting penalty with a calm finish into the corner.  Limavady HS scared Loreto by scoring a late goal despite the outstanding efforts of Joe McNicholl and Ethan Devlin.  However, Loreto remained composed and saw the game out to ensure the Coleraine & District Under 12 trophy would remain at Loreto for the third year in a row.  Final score:  Loreto College 3 – 2 Limavady High School.

The team members and their coach, Mr Eddie McCloskey, were congratulated on this wonderful success in their first term of competitive football for the school by Mr Michael James, Loreto College Principal.
