As part of European restart a heart day on the 16th October, the PE staff decided to teach all Year 9 and 10 students Emergency Life Support and Heartstart during their PE classes.

Pupils are learning to help someone who is unresponsive and not breathing, including how to recognise and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED kept in the Colleges office). After this session, pupils will feel comfortable recognising the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, reassuring the casualty, putting them in the recovery position or staring CPR and getting help.

They are learning to check the following:
D  Danger (to First Aider or Casualty)
R  Response
S  Shout for help, standby
A  Airways (head tilt, chin lift)
B  Breathing (look, feel and listen for 10 seconds)
If breathing put in Recovery position, if not call 999/112 and get AED
C  Start heart compressions 30 to 2 rescue breaths

Continue until H.E.A.R:  Help arrives, you’re Exhausted, Ambulance arrives of casualty Recovers

All PE staff are involved and delivering these lessons in the course of the week.
