12/10/2018 MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK AT LORETO COLLEGE

Several events were held to mark Mental Health Awareness Week at Loreto College, following a year-long programme in which all students, staff and parents received Mental Health Awareness training.  This year the global theme for Mental Health Awareness Day was ‘Young people and mental health in a changing world’.

Safeguarding talks were held for all students in Years 8-10 in the course of the week.  These talks focused especially on online safety, cyberbullying and alcohol awareness and were very well received by the students.

Year 8 and 9 students enjoyed a talk and performance by singer/songwriter Simon James, centred on social media, cyberbullying and mental health.  All Year 10 students attended a performance entitled ‘Last Orders’ by the Solomon Theatre Company, arranged by the Causeway Coast and Glens and Glens Policing and Community Safety Partnership, highlighting issues centred on underage consumption of alcohol.  Later in the term, Year 10 will have an internet safety presentation entitled ‘Control – Alt – Delete’, performed by the Spanner in the Works Theatre Company.

Loreto College’s Pastoral Care Co-ordinator Mrs Frances Pepin was delighted to be nominated for a prestigious award as a Young People’s Mental Health Champion, in the ‘Championing Young People’s Mental Health’ category, following her extensive work in partnership with the Northern Trust’s Mental Health Initiative over the past year.

Safeguarding Co-ordinator at Loreto College, Mrs Siobhan McCarry, commented that Loreto College looks forward to developing its expertise and facilities in terms of mental health for all its students and staff in the months and years ahead.
