10/11/2007 LORETO HISTORY STUDENTS VISIT BERLIN

A group of forty-one GCSE History students spent five days in Berlin at the end of October, pursuing a closer understanding of some crucial elements of their studies.

Accompanied by teachers Mr Bob Murphy, Mr Emmett Harkin, Mrs Oonah McEwan and Mrs Siobhan Mullan, the students visited a number of key historical sites and exhibitions in the German city.  The sites visited by the Loreto group included the historic Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, and an interactive visitor centre explaining the complex history of Berlin.  The group also visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and Berlin’s Jewish Museum and Holocaust Memorial.  Other highlights of the visit included a boat trip and a visit to the Olympic Stadium, as well as several social events during the evenings of the stay, such as a bowling competition and a table quiz.

Mr Bob Murphy, Head of History at Loreto College, who organised the trip, commented that the students had found the experience to be a valuable learning opportunity.  The history of Berlin and its surrounding area has much to teach young people both in the context of GCSE History and in terms of what we should all learn from the events of the past.
