The Year 8 Gaelic team from Loreto College reached the quarter final stage of the annual JM Murphy cup at Aquinas Grammar School, Belfast on Thursday 31st May.  During the group stages they faced some very stiff opposition.  In the first game they played St Louis’ GS, Kilkeel and were very unlucky to lose by a point on a scoreline of 1.2 to 1.1.  Leon scored Loreto’s goal and point in that game.

The second group game was against a strong St Ciaran’s, Ballygawley side.  St Ciaran’s ran out comprehensive winners on a scoreline of 3.4 to 1.1.  Niall scored a goal and Leon a point for Loreto.

The third group game and Loreto’s best performance of the competition was against eventual winners, St Joseph’s GS Donaghmore.  This was a low scoring affair with Donaghmore winning by a point on a scoreline of 0.2 to 0.1.  Joe scored Loreto’s point in this game.

The final group game was against St Patrick’s HS Keady and was the decider of who out of the two schools would progress to the quarter finals.  Loreto found another gear in this game and ran out 2.2 to 0.1 winners.  The goals came from the Glenullin contingent JF and Matthew, with the points coming from Joe and JF.

Loreto were pitted against the other groups top team, Rathmore GS Belfast.  The Loreto boys battled hard and showed great promise at the beginning of the game.  However, Rathmore found their rhythm and eventually won comfortably on a score of 2.1 to 1.0.  Loreto’s goal was scored by Joe.

It was a very competitive contest at Aquinas and although some the results didn’t all go Loreto’s way, the boys can take solace in the fact that there is very little between ourselves and any of the other teams.  A lot can be learned from this competition and it can be used as a foundation to build on for the future.
