Y13 students who have achieved Heartstart First Aid certificates

A group of 29 sixth form students from Loreto College Coleraine have completed a qualification in First Aid.  The students completed the Heartstart qualification during their Physical Education time over a six-week period, run by PE teachers Mrs Maureen McCullough and Ms Julie Wilson, both trained first aid instructors.

Heartstart UK is an initiative co-ordinated by the British Heart Foundation to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives. It provides opportunities for people to learn the vital skills of Emergency Life Support. Through Heartstart UK the British Heart Foundation aims to strengthen the chain of survival by promoting and supporting Emergency Life Support training in the community.

During their six week course, the Loreto students learned to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),care for an unconscious casualty, help someone who is choking, manage serious bleeding, and recognise and treat someone having a heart attack. The students learned that the benefit of CPR performed by a bystander in an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is significant. A person who can perform effective CPR whilst the ambulance is on its way, can more than double a person’s chance of surviving.

The students also achieved their Young Lifesaver’s award from St John Ambulance. This award covered other important aspects of First Aid such as poisioning, bleeding, burns, shock, scalds, and fractures.

Congratulating the students on their achievement, Loreto College Principal Mr Michael James commented that it was reassuring to know that at least 29 Loreto students could now help save a life by performing Emergency Life Support in the community.

The students who achieved the First Aid qualifications are: Year 13 Weronika Blaszczyk, Kirstie Brown, Niamh Carr, Emma Connolly, Alisha Convery, Mallaidh Devine, Catriona Dickey, Cabrina Farren, Eve Gardiner, Muryn Green, Maeve Hegarty, Fionnuala Keane, Emer Kelly, Riona Lafferty, Orlaith McCarry, Meagan McFeely, Kirsty McFerran, Nora McIlvenny, Susan McKendry, Hannah Mullan, Kate Nelis, Aisling O'Hare, Cait Passmore, Yasmine Peacock, Hannah Rafferty, Oran Somers Orla Wallace, Carmen Owens, Courtney McKeague.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated the students and their teachers on achieving these lifesaving qualifications.
