22/09/2007 “CALAMITY JANE” COMING SOON TO LORETO COLLEGE COLERAINE

Final rehearsals are underway at Loreto College Coleraine for the school’s production of well-known musical “Calamity Jane”, which opens on Tuesday 9th October 2007 in the College Hall.

Made famous by the 1953 film starring Doris Day, the musical is set in the western American town of Deadwood.  The eponymous tomboy heroine Calamity Jane starts the show as an orthodox figure, engaging in regular battles of wits with locals such as Wild Bill Hickok.  She promises to bring the famous Chicago stage star Adelaide Adams to sing locally; amid the excitement, a case of mistaken identity leads to Adelaide Adams’ maid, Katie, performing instead.  Having received a rapturous reception, Katie promises to repay Jane by turning her into a “lady”, so that she can impress the handsome Lieutenant Gilmartin.  Complexities and confusion ensue…

“Calamity Jane” promises to provide an outstanding evening’s entertainment for all ages, offering humour, romance, lively chorus numbers and some memorable songs, including the Oscar-winning “Secret Love”.  There is great talent and enthusiasm among the cast, with experienced performers Mary McCrory and Patrick Kelly taking the lead parts of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok.  Among the students who will be performing other major roles with style and aplomb are Therese Tunney, Elizabeth Lane, Megan McGonigle, Joe Diamond, Shane McLaughlin, Anna Maguire and James Shannon.  With a total cast numbering approximately 120, much of Loreto College’s extensive musical and dramatic talent will be on show.

Harnessing all this talent will be the winning team behind the Castlerock Road school’s most recent productions, Director and Head of Drama Mrs Oonah McEwan, and Musical Director and Choirmaster Mr Howard Gillespie, ably assisted by Choreographer Ms Vanessa Redpath and a dedicated stage, props and costumes team.

Tickets are already going fast for the four-night run of “Calamity Jane”; those who are quick may still be able to secure seats for the Opening Night, Tuesday 9th October 2007.  The musical closes on Friday 12th October, and those wishing to purchase tickets for any of the four performances should waste no time in phoning the “Calamity Jane” Box Office on 028 70343611.

Don’t miss this chance of a memorable evening’s entertainment!
