Ciaran O’Kane, named among the top twenty Youth Volunteers in the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards 2018

A student from Loreto College Coleraine  has been named as one of twenty finalists in the prestigious 2018 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards Programme.

Ciaran O’Kane, a Year 14 student at Loreto College, will receive a €500 award and a Silver Medallion in recognition of his outstanding community service, carried out within the last three years.  He will be presented with these awards at an Awards Ceremony and Lunch at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, on Thursday 22nd March. In addition to this, Ciaran is among twenty young people shortlisted to be named as one of two All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year, who will be named at the Awards Ceremony.

Ciaran is well-known in Loreto College and in his local parish in Limavady for his voluntary and charity work.  He has taken a leading role in activities for the Society of St Vincent de Paul both in Loreto College and in his parish, as well as getting involved in many parish activities and services.  In school, he acts as a literacy mentor in the weekly Homework Club as well as having volunteered in the same capacity in the Shared Education Project last year in a joint project between Loreto College, Coleraine Grammar School and St Joseph’s College.  He is a prominent member of the Loreto College Justice League, which organises and carries out a whole range of fundraising activities for the school’s designated charities in the course of each year.  Outside school, alongside work for his parish, Ciaran plays a leading role as a volunteer for the local youth camp, Hope, which runs a camp for primary school pupils every summer and works on fundraising activities throughout the year.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to Ciaran for this very well-deserved recognition of his huge efforts in support of others.  Mr James added that Ciaran acts as a true ambassador of the principle of volunteering and community service, and stands as an outstanding role model to his fellow students.  Mrs Siobhan McCarry, Head of Religious Education at Loreto, praised Ciaran’s cheerful and unassuming attitude to his amazingly generous service in support of others throughout the entirety of his time at Loreto College.

Congratulating Ciaran on his generosity and commitment, Mr James urged Loreto’s students to support and be inspired by Ciaran’s outstanding service on behalf of others.
