18/06/2007 ALL-IRELAND DATE FOR LORETO COLLEGE ATHLETE

A Year 10 student from Loreto College Coleraine has rounded off a very successful year in athletics by qualifying for the All Ireland Schools’ Finals for the second consecutive year.

Emma Doherty took the bronze medal in the Under 16 250m hurdles event at the Ulster Schools’ Athletics Championship, qualifying for the All Ireland event to be held during the summer holidays.

This is not Emma’s first success at this level.   After a good season last year, she scored a notable success during the 2006 summer break, when she took the Silver medal in the 75 metres hurdles event at the national event for athletics clubs on 18th July 2006.  A native of Greysteel, Emma trains at City of Derry Athletics club, where she has been coached by Tony Robinson for over a year.  This promising young talent has also excelled at sport during her years at Loreto College.

Later in the year, Emma continued her winning ways, taking the bronze medal in the Under 15 60 metres hurdles event at the Northern Ireland Indoor Athletics event, held at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast in late February.  As a result of this success, she qualified for the All-Ireland finals which were held in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary at the end of March.  At this event, Emma was unfortunately injured during her heat. Despite this setback, she still qualified for the final; however, her injury proved too severe for her to be able to compete in the showcase race.

Emma was congratulated on these wonderful achievements by Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE, and Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal, on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
