Loreto bowed out of the Oisin McGrath shield in a thrilling encounter with Rathmore on Monday 20th November.

After a pulsating 50 minutes of end to end football it took another 20 minutes of extra time to separate the two sides in Magherafelt with Rathmore edging the game.

The first period of the game loreto dominated possession and scored some fantastic scores with Dungiven man Joe Dillon scoring two excellent goals at the end of the second half.  Captain John Francis Burns was putting in a real shift and leading by example from the throw in.  During the second half however, Rathmore found another gear and stated to close the gap in scores.

After some heroic defending from Willie John Bradley, Matthew Smyth, Callum Doherty and Ryan McCloskey the referee gave Rathmore an easy 21 yard free which they knocked over the bar to level the scores.

Normal time finished Loreto 3.6 to Rathmore 4.3

Extra time began very much as the second half had finished, with Rathmore piling on pressure to the Loreto backs.  Despite the best efforts of the Loreto boys, Rathmore found the net another 3 times during this period winning by a tally of 9 points.

The Loreto boys can take some positives from the game as they showed great character when under tremendous pressure and if it hadn’t been for the wood work (which Loreto struck 6 times!) they may have been the team progressing to the final rather than Rathmore.  A learning curve for Loreto but no doubt they will come back better because of it.
