Stephen McKillop of Nortel presents the first laptop of a 65-strong donation

Loreto College Coleraine took a further step into the world of ICT this week following a generous donation to the school by Nortel Communications.

Stephen McKillop, a former student of Loreto College who now works for the prestigious company, developed the idea of donating 65 laptop computers to the College for the use of its teaching staff.

Nortel is a recognised leader in delivering communications capabilities that enhance the human experience, ignite and power global commerce, and secure and protext the world’s most critical information.  Serving both service provider and enterprise customers, Nortel delivers innovative technology solutions encompassing end-to-end broadband, Voice over IP, multimedia services and applications, and wireless broadband designed to help people solve the world’s greatest challenges.

At Loreto, the laptops donated by Nortel will be used by the teaching staff to bring ICT into the learning and teaching experience for students throughout the curriculum.  The laptops will allow for the preparation of detailed resources at home, which may be used to maximise interactive learning in every academic subject.  The acquisition of the laptops complements the school’s strategy for ICT of having an interactive whiteboard and data projector in every classroom by 2009.

College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Stephen McKillop and to Nortel for this generous donation, adding that the initiative would also serve to raise student awareness of the careers available to them in the world of computers and multimedia communication.
