The Senior Choir from Loreto College Coleraine ended the year on a high note this week, taking two top awards at the Bord Na Mona Navan Choral Festival.

The choir, under the direction of Choirmaster Mr Howard Gillespie and accompanied on piano by Year 13 student Christine Hickey, entered two sections of the prestigious competition, which drew entries from throughout Ireland.

Taking first place in the Youth Choir Under 18 section, the choir went on to take participate in the tightly-contested Under 24 National Youth Choir of the Year competition. Impressing the adjudicators and the audience, the Loreto choir swept aside all opposition and took first place in this section too, bringing home an impressive trophy and a cash award of 400 for the Loreto Music Department.

This was the culmination of another successful season for the Loreto choir, which was recently invited to take part in the BBC Northern Ireland programme Our Wee World, which features music along the course of the River Bann from Toomebridge to the sea. In the six-part series, which is due to be screened in the Autumn, the Loreto choir can be seen singing special arrangements of Kitty of Coleraine and May it be, specially arranged for them by John Anderson, musical director of BBC Northern Ireland.

The choir, along with Choirmaster Mr Howard Gillespie and Head of Music Miss Roisin Stewart, were praised on their impressive achievements and their national title by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.
