Shannon Baird, who has been selected for the Ulster Schools Swimming Tenerife Tour next October

The 2017 Ulster Schools Swimming Secondary Schools Championships was held on Saturday 18th March in Ballymena Leisure Centre Swimming Pool.  Shannon Baird, a Year 9 pupil at Loreto College entered in two individual events in the 11-14 year age group, 100m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle.   It was an extremely well attended gala, with in excess of 600 entries in the Junior and Open sections from 60 plus Secondary Schools; Loreto College was also represented at the event by Niamh McGarry (Year 8), Anna McGinley (Year 9) and Orla Quinn (Year 9), who took part in the relays, with the team 4th in both freestyle and individual medley relays.

Shannon Baird got through to the finals and was well placed in both her events.  In the 100m Breaststroke final Shannon finished in third place and in the 100m Freestyle finished in fourth place, having gained a new personal best time in both swims.
Shannon’s successful swims in these two events has now resulted in her being offered a place and the opportunity to represent her school at the Ulster Schools Swimming Tenerife Tour in October 2017.   Having won this selection from all the entries across Ulster Secondary Schools, this indeed is a great honour for Shannon.  This is a week of intensive training in a 50m open pool in Tenerife, with excellent coaching support provided by Ulster Schools Swimming.  It is a tremendous opportunity for Shannon to train in excellent warm weather conditions along with other like-minded talented young swimmers.   Shannon is looking forward to it very much.

Shannon was congratulated on her performance and her selection for the Tenerife Tour by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
