Head of Department:

Teaching Staff:
Mrs M McGill

Technician:
Mr I O'Hara

Art & Design is offered to all pupils in Years 8, 9 & 10.  A wide range of activities is covered giving the pupils opportunities to be creative and imaginative. Enjoyment and a sense of fun are important elements in the department. All pupils are supported and encouraged to discover their artistic talents. Work in two and three dimensions is covered and theme work includes work in both Fine Art and Design. The work of famous artists, architects, sculptors and designers from both past and present is studied. Pupils may choose to keep the subject on for G.C.S.E. and thereafter for AS and A2.

We have a well resourced suite of rooms; one of these is specifically for ceramics and contains a kiln. The other two are designated classrooms with electronic whiteboard facilities.

The work of our pupils past and present is exhibited throughout the school. Pupils are encouraged to enter competitions and get involved in art courses in Art Centres and visit Art galleries

Our Senior pupils visit the Dublin galleries each year and usually travel with pupils from Coleraine Girls’ High School’.

We have achieved notable successes in recent years.

• Winning entries over the last number of years in the Causeway Peace Network Art competitions.
• Winning entries in the Coleraine Art Society School competition.
• Winning entries in the Translink’ Ulster in Bloom’ competition.
• Success in the NASUWT Art & Design competition.

The Art & Design department contributes to many areas of school life and we have combined with other subjects in successful joint projects. There are strong links with the I.T. department and we look forward to developing expertise in media and animation processes. School shows, the annual magazine and school liturgies all benefit from the work of our department.
